| i just picked up an izip 500 for cheap.the bike is in great shape, and runs smooth, but top speed is only 12 to 14 mph.and not a whole lot of torque either.it seems kind of wimpy for a 500 watt machine.i own a 250 watt that runs faster, the 10.5wh batteries came up to full charge 26.8v and have held up for 4 miles so far.nothing is getting hot, chain is lubed, brakes arent sticking.is it possiblr this thing came from the factory slow?and are there any simple controller mods that would help??? |

i dont know of any controller mods, but there are others here that have more knowledge on controllers than I.
yes its possible that it came from the factory kinda dogish. sounds like you have done all the checks for friction so it just may be slow, but that sounds like an average speed. to speed it up you would need a more power full controller or swap the sprockets out. |

You could try pulling the connectors, and using some jumper leads to put battery direct to the motor. if it sounds/spins considerably faster, your controller is the thing that is slowing it down.
at that point, you make a decision of what you want to do. I had one in the shop like this (controller seemed to dog it down), and I took some advice here, and wired in a faux "turbo switch". Of course a turbo switch just shorts/shunts the controller.

Go ahead and overvolt that puppy! Cram an extra 12V battery in there like Mr.Exon says and that thing will fly like the wind. I did that to an S500 that I have, and had to beat out the battery compartment to get the 12V 9AH batts to fit, but once I did, man, did that scoot move.... Just don't let the volts get too low, or you will lose your batteries. (My wife won't even ride the S500 now, says it goes too fast for her!) Someday I will get around to changing the controller out to a 36 volt version, but for now it's just too much fun!
If it can be modified, it will be better! |

Yea all you have to do is add a 12volt battery in series and it will go faster. |

how would YOU charge them? Could you get a 36 volt charger and use the same charging port?
I am just freaked out over that throttle freezing wide open I must have torn every groin muscle that I had when I jumped off that thing???? |

I'd charge them with a 36V charger if you can as it'll charge quicker.

This is strictly MY opinion:
At least in my area, 12v 12 ah batts are $5 LESS expensive than the 10ah ones. So I stuff 12ah batts into it.
What I like to do with these schwinns, is get 3 of the bigger 12ah batts. stand them on their sides, and set all 3 in line. prewire them in series. Then black tape the whole bundle together. Then drop the block of batteries into the battery compartment.
Then I grab a couple of the big 36" ty raps (used for heating ducts, etc), and strap the batts down into the compartment.
I then go to home depot, and get a 12" galvanized pipe nipple (1/2" pipe is fine-whatever fits)and weave it in between the bars at the neck of the deck. Put 2 end caps on, install a couple of thru bolts/nuts. This becomes my foot pegs, since the tall batteries now make replacing the deck unnecessary.
Lastly I buy a 36v charger. They run fast, and feel torquey.

heres the look. Nothing sexy, but it goes pretty fast, pretty long.
If you already have the stock 10ah batts, just add another one and tape em all together. The "black block" look (1 roll of black tape) makes it neater looking.
