this info was posted by "chopper" a moderator on our sister site about parallel/series wiring
Ok, this will be a basic parallel and series wiring how-to.
First off, lets look at what the difference is, and why you'd use one as opposed to the other. Parallel wiring takes one or more batteries and connects them to produce greater battery capacity (run time), but keeps the voltage the same. So if you have three 12 volt batteries in parallel, you'll still have 12 volts, but you'll have 3 times the battery capacity. So, in short, parallel is used to increase capacity.
Series wiring is used to increase voltage. Lets say for instance you want to make your PW 18 volts. The best way to do this is with three 6 volt batteries wired in series. Basically, you add the voltages of all the batteries in the series and you have your overall voltage. The capacity however, stays the same. So if all those 6 volt batteries are 12amp/hour, then they'll still be 12amp/hour after they're wired in series. You do not gain battery capacity in series like you do in parallel.
Now for the schematics. Both examples will assume three 6 volt batteries.
Parallel: One wire coming off positive terminal of each battery, all three wires tied together and connected to positive lead from PW vehichle. One wire coming off negative terminal of each battery and connected to negative lead from PW.
Series: Coming from PW vehicle, positive lead coming from PW to positive side of battery one. Connect a wire from negative side of battery 1 to positive side of battery 2. Then from negative side of battery 2 to positive side of battery 3. Finally, negative side of battery 3 to negative lead from PW.
This video may help if you are having trouble understanding these connections. http://www.modifiedpowerwheels.com/viewblog.aspx?blogid=101

again, posted by "chopper"
Here is a couple of crude drawings I did up that might help you understand a little better.

haha! I think there is a type or the diagram is wrong.
"Configuration 4" is supposed to say "Quadruple voltage, capacity remains the same". Also, unless that's how they spell "Quadraple" in UK, then they mispelled "Quadruple".lol
Another something I came across elsewhere and I'm not sure how important it is in our rides, but a couple guys on two different solar sites were adamant about keeping wires at same length and gauge for discharge/charge purposes. I'm sure quite a few of us here don't always maintain same lengths.

But isn't "4" also mislabled? If they were 12V batts that wiring would yield 48V which is Quadruple teh voltage, not just "Double".
And I didn't realize the bottom diagrams two "Configuration 2" and two "7".

| "4" is mislabeled. All four batteries are in seris so the word quadruple should be in the label not "double" |

I'll try and clean it up for us. Let me just recap the errors,
- configuration 2 needs to be Quadruple not Double
- The configurations all on the bottom should be identified by there own numbers.
- They're mispelling Quadruple with "Quadraple", unless that's how they spell it in UK.
