I have 2 schwinn 500s scooters and I just bought new batteries for both units and they are both very slow my daughters friend has a new e-zip 400 and she blows her away is there anything simple I can do to get more speed? They are 24 volt units. My daughter says the s stands for SLOW on the s500 name badge?

if they are not performing like they were before the batteries were replaced i would suspect the controllers are going bad.

if they are acting as they were when they were new then bumping up to 36v would be the esiest upgrade and cheapest too.

welcome to the forum happy firt post haha you can upgrade the motor in the scooters ifyou dont want to upgrade the motor another thing you can do is overvolt the motor and controller but the down sides on overvolting are you will lose the lvc if you have one and your motor wont last as long as the glue will melt inside of it you can also do a complete upgrade motor controller throttle. the cheapest way to increase speed would be drop a bunch of teeth on you rear sprocket and go up a few teeth on the front sprocket that will help you gain a couple mph

for example:
Rear: 55 tooth
Front:11 tooth
this is a 5:1 ratio. an exaple ratio which will increase speed is
Rear: 44 tooth
Front 15 tooth
this is a 44:15 tooth ratio or maybe its backwards but these are way to increase speed

Not so great tonight. The the switch I had been using welded itself closed so the thing went out of control ,sent me crashing into my daughters boyfriends car breaking the handlebars on the scooter denting the car! But that did not stop me I found another switch and put the battery pack on one of my schwinns. Ya not the same polarity This time I strips the sprocket right of the 500 watt motor after that I called it a night.

Tomorrow is another day besides I am getting a mongoose 350 in the morning that I found on craigs list for $50. Never Never Never give up!!

Sounds like a crappy night all around. But, you're just that much closer to the good times coming.

I welded my first switch about 2 months ago. It was the stock Schwinn rocker. DPST 16A wired in parallel so it should have handled 32A. Used it for many months on Currie controllers and never had a problem. I installed an LB37 and upped to 48V and within a few weeks, the switch had welded so I could not turn off the controller. Fortunately it did not affect anything except my ability to easily shut-off the scooter. What caused yours to go out of control? Did you change controllers when you changed to 36V?

I think he was using the switch in place of a controller. Sorry to hear that.

I was using a 40 amp 12v Toggle switch.any one use a regular light switch like you would find in a home? That should work right? Is AC DC that different?

When using that toggle at 36V, it's rating drops to about 13A. You are drawing way more than that, especially from a dead stop. It will be difficult to find a switch that will handle that load and still be easy on and off on the handlebars.

Yes, I remember reading that someone used a 115VAC wall switch. Someone else used a big circuit breaker.

If you must use a toggle switch for a throttle, plan on it welding someday, and leave a loop of power wire and an easy-to-separate plug in a quick to grab location.

Was the 115VAC wall switch successful? I am not ready for that kind of excitement again?? Did you see where that guy just added a 3rd battery to his Schwinn 555 without modifying the controller or throttle??
I am tempted to give that a whirl.

If that will work it will be a whole lot safer than what you've been using. I think the wall switch thing worked for awhile. Not sure of the exact outcome. My belief is that they will all weld someday.

My "wall switch" jobs only held up on small weak scoots like the e100.
I now stick to a 30 amp 1 pole circuiy breaker. $6 @ home depot.

They have 4 rivots, I drill out 2 and thru bolt it to the handlebars. I do this ONLY when I'm broke, and gonna give the scoot to a relative. No lawsuits!

From what I've gathered DC current is a bit more intense than AC. Check this out.

AHHH,that was a nice safe feeling ride after installing the breaker it worked out Great! The controllers must have some speed setting or governor built in because without the controller the thing moves out quite well I was surprised. Of course 36V is better!!

That's nice, but I'd be careful. Hopefully you incorporated a manual circuit breaking option just incase. That 12V/30A breaker on 36V is now only rated at ~10A handling.

It's for house wiring, so it's rated 30A @ 120V, right?

Oh yep, read back some, its a HomeDepot find so most likely 120V.

Still should be careful as there are differences in the DC and AC currents so one can't just convert 120VAC as they would 120VDC.

My calculation was going based of my assumption(incorrect) that you were using a 12V/30A automotive relay. However, you are using a home breaker/switch deal and so I'm not sure the conversion for that, or if there even is. I came a cross a thread a couple days ago where a guy actually asked a question and that's where the discussion led to the conversion of AC to DC in regards to rating of electrical components. The thread actually ended with him not getting an answer.

Tomcat, this is the only old pic I found of one of my earlier "circuit breaker" jobs. I later refined it to a slimmer breaker. But this gives you the idea. No arcing, no problems handling the amperage. Just kind of rough with the full speed, and of course it is dangerous.

My daughters 18 year old 6.5 foot tall boyfriend was laughing at me last night while I was riding my scooter. I said to him you want to try it?

I told him to get himself rolling before he turned it on and that he should lean forward until it got going. He said ya whatever. Well he sat on the seat started to push himself along and when he hit the power the scooter shot out of his hands doing a wheelie sending the scooter down the road freewheeling at least 75 feet Narrowly missing a car and finally hitting the curb and spinning out.

I now have have his respect for my little scooter.

I laughed so hard that I almost wet my pants when that thing took off! I have to get a camcorder to record this stuff.

LOL cool. That happened to MY neighbor (on my 500) as well. The rear wheel left a hole in the lawn.
